What Is Voice Therapy?

Your Voice Should Not Sound Like This and It Doesn't Have To

If your voice has been hoarse, strained, weak, or just not right, you're not imagining it. Voice problems are real, they're common, and in most cases they're very treatable. The challenge is finding someone who knows how to identify the real cause.

At Arizona Speech & Swallow Therapy, we specialize in diagnosing and treating voice disorders in adults. Whether your voice problem started recently or has been bothering you for years, whether you've already seen an ENT or are just starting to look for answers, we'd love to help. Start with a free phone consultation and we'll tell you exactly whether we can help and what to expect.

Have You Been Told "Nothing is Wrong" But Your Voice Still Isn't Right?

This is one of the most common stories we hear. Muscle Tension Dysphonia doesn't always show up on a scope, and the vocal cords can look completely normal while the surrounding muscles are causing all the problems. Our therapists are specifically trained to find and treat these patterns. We've helped many patients who felt they were out of options - call us to learn more.

Signs You've Come to the Right Place

Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

These are the most common things patients tell us when they first call. If any of these sound like you, then we know we can help.

"I've had a hoarse voice for weeks and it won't go away"

Persistent hoarseness that doesn't resolve on its own, especially after a cold or period of heavy voice use, is one of the classic signs of a voice disorder.

"My voice gives out by the afternoon"

Vocal fatigue that gets worse throughout the day, especially if you're a teacher, professional, or anyone who talks a lot, is a key sign that your voice isn't working efficiently.

"I feel tightness or something stuck in my throat when I talk or swallow"

Throat tightness and globus sensation (feeling of something stuck) are hallmark symptoms of Muscle Tension Dysphonia, and they frequently affect both voice and swallowing at the same time.

"My voice is important for my career and I need this fixed"

Teachers, fitness instructors, executives, administrative roles, attorneys, salespeople, performers: Your voice is your professional instrument. We offer specialized voice care designed for high-demand voice users who can't afford to wait.

What is Muscle Tension Dysphonia?

MTD is a voice disorder caused by excessive muscle tension around the voice box. It's one of the most common voice conditions in adults and one of the most frequently missed. If you've had a hoarse voice, throat tightness, or vocal fatigue that won't resolve and your doctors haven't found a structural cause then MTD is very likely the answer.

Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD) — The Most Misdiagnosed Voice Disorder

What Causes Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD)?

MTD develops when the muscles around the larynx (voice box) become chronically overworked and tense, often triggered by vocal overuse, illness, stress, or learned compensatory habits. The body begins recruiting the wrong muscles to produce voice, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of tension and strain.

Why MTD Is So Often Missed?

MTD doesn't show up on most scopes or imaging, and the vocal cords often look completely normal. This leads many patients to be told "nothing is wrong". The real problem is in the muscles, which is exactly what speech therapy addresses.

The Good News About MTD Treatment

MTD responds extremely well to voice therapy. Most patients notice meaningful improvement within just a few sessions. The key is working with a therapist who specializes in identifying and releasing the specific tension patterns causing your symptoms, which is our clinical focus.

Who Gets MTD?

MTD is especially common in teachers, executives, fitness instructors, attorneys, and performers, high-demand voice users who push through strain rather than resting. It also commonly follows a period of illness, significant stress, or a life event that changes how you use your voice.
